A Solo B.F.A. Thesis Exhibit
By: Jenna Wood
This work takes furniture and decor and elevates them into personal artistic creations. Creating functional art bridges the gap between abstract and realism, allowing both a quotidian and a personal meaning. In addition to hand-crafted, ceramic, fibers, and sculpted original pieces, this show reflects my care for the environment by utilizing thrifted and second hand materials that have been transformed into modern fixtures. Each piece had an individual journey of taking a descriptor word, given by family and friends, and creating artwork based on that word. These descriptions took all paths, some of which I agreed with and some of which I did not. Having to rectify the deviation from my publicized identity and seeing myself introspectively, guided how I approached each piece. The path from these descriptions to artwork that is both personal and public exemplifies who I am as an artist and a person. This balance is presented through an interior design aesthetic to demonstrate the versatility of art making and the importance that functional art plays in my life. Afterall, to me, art is my home and I am an artist. This is my work, these are my creations, this is my beginning.
